Does he like me or does he just want to hook up?

I've recently been talking to my brother's friend. He's my age, and my brother said he is a good guy. When I started talking to him, he mentioned that he doesn't want a relationship because they "suck," and he just likes "doing stuff." He said it in a joking way, but I'm still concerned that I'm being used. I made it quite clear that I am not just going to hook up with him if we aren't actually together. However, he's still talking to me, and he's always the one to text me first. I sort of like him, but I'm afraid if he asks to hang out sometime he'll try to pull something. Is this just a stage or do you think he will ever change his ways? I will not be used.
